We arrived at our destination at around 10.10 o’clock in the morning. We are escorted into a meeting room for a short briefing about overall process of telecommunication access to all users in the country.

We were then taken around to look at the systems used in the building. At the first floor, we first entered the GKPG, BSC3, KPGG7 & IVC room. Here is the room where there many servers powering the whole telecommunication system. We witnessed many servers with complex circuitry in various blocks, the size of a standard refrigerator. Next, we were escorted to the transmission room where we witnessed all the server systems used to provide telecommunication access to all areas under its transmission limit. The temperature for the rooms on the first floor is at low levels to prevent overheating of the server systems.

On the second floor, we were taken to the ISC2/ SMSC room. Here is where they showed yet another room with many blocks of servers. But this time we are looking at the servers for controlling the short messaging service (SMS). Next is the logica room where we were shown all the servers for system integration.

The next floor we are explained and briefed thoroughly about all the control and service systems used in providing 3G communication. We were taught the basic theory of the transmission and receiving parts of a 3G communication. The fundamental components in a 3G network are also briefly explained. There is fourth floor but it is the air conditioning room and since there is nothing technical to our course, we didn’t visit the fourth floor.

After visiting all floors, we were treated with KFC and Domino’s Pizzas for our lunch by the caring staff. We thank our lecturer Dr Norbahiah for arranging such a meaningful and eye-opening trip to Celcom.
